1894mk2Removing bluing from mauser bolt
I'm just about to have my 09 Argentine custom 7x57 reblued. Normal smith is backed up so I'm using another outfit that have done some good work for me in the past.
Previous smith covered the bolt forward of the handle with tape to avoid it being blued, this outfit will blue all of it and then polish it off forward of the bolt handle.
I'm a bit concerned as I don't want any metal removed from the bolt.
Any comments?

MasteriflemanIf he is using the typical hot blueing method, Naval Jelly will remove it. Just be careful not to put it on anything you want blue on. I would tape off any area you want the blue to remain. This won't work on rust blue.

vapodogI think you're being overly cautious. Removing bluing from a bolt does not necessarily require the remaval of metal. Even if it's buffed off the meatal loss is not always measurable even with a micrometer.

AtkinsonYes, your being overly cautious, no harm will come from polishing a bolt, in fact most bolts need polishing as well as the inside of the bolt body.

1894mk2Thanks for setting my mind at rest. Better to be overly cautious than have an action ruined!
