<jsn>7mm Remington Mag rebarrel to 300 RUM
I'd like to rebarrel my Remington 700LA in 7mm rem mag to the 300RUM. Any problems with this conversion? Would it be a simple rebarrel or would some work need to be done to the bolt face mag well or rails to make it feed properly? Any info on this conversion would be helpful.
Thanks
John

stubblejumperThe rails need to be machined to feed properly.I would only trust this job to a very experienced gunsmith or the gun could become a single shot.

RobgunbuilderThis is a pretty straight-foreward job that any decent gunsmith can perform for you. I would suggest you get a 1:10 twist 28 inch SS. barrel from shilen or Douglas I'd suggest a #5 contour or larger. The larger barrel will require you to open up the barrel channel on your stock. The bolt face is the same as the 7mm mag, however, the rails need to be opened just enough to feed the RUM cartridge whose body diameter is larger than the 7mm mag. This is NOT A PROBLEM. You will need a new magazine box designed for the 300 Rum which you can get from Brownells. Finally, I'd suggest a Holland or Tubb .250 recoil lug and glass bed or pillar bed the whole thing. Unfortunately, unless you can do alot of this work yourself, or have a buddy who can, what I've described will probably cost you nearly as much as if you sold off the 7mm mag and bought yourself a new 300RUM. -Rob
