Tang safety?
I've seen 'tang safety' mentioned on several rifles. Is a 'tang safety' one that slides?

Sorry if this is a rather juvenile question. I tried Googling it but couldn't get a clear answer.

The tang is located behind the receiver above the wrist of the stock, and a tang safety is one that sits there instead of being on the left or right or mounted on the cocking piece.

Double-barrel shotguns and double rifles often have them, as do the Ruger No. 1s and the old style Ruger bolt rifles.

Try this.

So a Tang safety is one that slides back and forth.
Charles, thanks for the pic to confirm what I thought.

This is IMHO a "BEST" example of a tang saftey.

Only if it is located at the tang. If it is located at the side of the action (Mark X, Sako?) it is not properly a tang safety.
