rebarrel a Rem 7400
I have a Rem 7400 in 270 It never did shoot very good. the crown got beat up in a fall and I think the barrel is bent as well.
I contacted Remington customer service and they want me to send them the rifle for an evaluation before they commit to a charge.
Anyone had any experience with them?
There are no gunsmiths in my area that can do this as far as I know.

My experience with the 7400s was limited to people who brought them in complaining of poor/failed extraction. I think because of the design, cleaning the chamber was more difficult and shooters tended not to clean them. Every one I had come in for that problem had ripped the extractor out of the bolt face and had a pitted chamber.

I am not sure what Remington will do for you as the last time I talked to them about barrels I got the old "no longer available" and that may very well be.

Many of these companies don't want to sell barrels without installing it themselves. Liability issues I imagine.

Did it shoot ok before the damage? Crowns can be re-cut and barrels straightened. A lot cheaper than replacement. You might search for a 'smith that can repair it. Failing that I would send it back to Remington for evaluation. You'd be out around $30 for shipping.

thanks, I had the crown repaired and that did not help.
I have kept the chamber clean and have had no problem extracting or feeding. I have had 2 different scopes on it.
It took a pretty good spill with my fat A** on top of it down a rocky hill
Thanks Dave

It is hard to bend a barrel even if you are stoutly built; tell us exactly how does it shoot? IE, how good of a group can you get at 100 yards? From a bench.

If it shoots 2 inches at 100 yards you're doing GREAT. It's a fire hose with a horrible trigger, not a varmint rifle. If you want something that's fast that will shoot well try a 7600. If you can get around the terrible trigger the factory ones will often shoot an inch. In days gone by I stuck a few Hart and Shilen barrels on them in 243, 7mm-08 and 308 and they shot 1/2 inch groups.

Semie automatic firearms with a ton of trash hanging off the barrel are simply not the most accurate things out there. Don't expect to much. I suppose if you did what the kids do with the M16 and pour $2000 into one you could make something . . . . . . . . . . .

When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years!

Hi, It patterns rather than groups.
it shoots high and low as much as 6 To 8" from shot to shot. Before the damage it was pretty consistent at 2 to 3"
all groups are at 100yrds.
the crown is a target crown don't remember the angle?
I would be happy with 2" groups again.
I am going to put a another scope on it and try. I have had 2 different scopes on it with the same results.

I know this may sound crazy , but is the barrel tight in the receiver?

Now that you bring it up. If someone crowned it, then it is possible they didn't get it reefed up tight enough again.

I'm glad someone is thinking !

I would check the barrel for bulges too.

If the 7400 shares the basic barrel design of my 760, the barrel will be screwed into a barrel extension and they come out of the receiver as an assembly. Then you re-barrel the extension and reassemble the rifle. Never owned a 742-7400 series gun so I hope all this typing isn't for naught...

You are right about the barrel extension thing; they work the same..
As for your 7400, I will have to see it in order to diagnose it and fix it.

You didn't mention if the rifle had a scope. If so, was the scope in the fall as well?

I have had two different scopes on the rifle and just mounted a redfield that I know for sure is good.
The barrel is tight.
I am headed to the range as soon as this hi wind lays down in the next few daYS.
