700 sts Rockwell
I recently had three Remington 700 receivers (stainless)
checked for hardness. They were 30, 30 and 31 respectively.

I am going to have some others checked.

Anybody else try this??

Not surprising, but also nothing to be overly concerned about.

Thanks!

According to this table your 700's have about a 140000 psi ultimate strength, assuming you were talking Rockwell C scale.

I'm surprised that they are that soft. Figured they'd be in the 40-42 range. Interesting....
They're hard enough, but in stainless, I'd like to see a little harder to reduce friction and gauling.

So what does all this mean ??

It means that they are hard enough not to dent (suffer setback) very easily but not hard enough to crack or shatter.
The s.s. models still have a CrMo bolthead so galling is not as probable as it would be with s.s. on s.s.

Pretty good for such a low budget rifle made in USA.
