81 blr alloy recvr strength
was wondering if the blr 81 model reciever was alloy for the 284 chambering?
i have a short blr and was considering a 350/284 rebarrel. i am a huge fan of the 350 mag but the rim is to large so this and the 358 are my options.
also, with the 20" tube am getting a reasonable increase in velocity with the 284 case vs the 358 in a short barrel or am i burning powder for no reason?
i guess a 22" tube can be had also but i have a 20" in my mits so i would like to use that.
i dont mind doing the case forming etc but if it a waste of time with a 20" barrel then 358 it is.
i am guessing an increase of 100 to 150 fps which would not be enough to warrant the 350/284. i owuld like to end up with a 250 yard point blank lever gun with 225's.
let me know what you think........
thanks

The BLR receiver only has to be strong enough to hold the scope. There's no stress or strain put on the receiver by firing, that's all taken care of by the barrel extension and bolt when they lock together.

It's the same with Remington, Browning and Winchester, too.

thanks jbelk. i thought maybe the alloy reciever in some way was made to handle the 308 case and nothing larger.
any thoughts on the velocity gain/loss with a 20"barrel and the 358 vs 350/284?
thanks

I just assumed the alloy receivered guns came in 284. If not, you'll not have any magazines to use. [Smile]

IF it were mine, I'd have it in 338-08 or 358 and forget the 284 case.......but that's MY opinion, only.

that is what i wanted. your opinion. i just have mountains of 284 brass. the 358 is what i started out to build but to much time to think has a way of making more work for yourself.
thanks for the response. it's appreciated........

.358
I have a Ruger 77 MKII rebarreled to .358 win with a shelin 22" bbl fiberglassed, piller beaded. never ben fired I will trade you for your .308 then you can rechamber to .350 Rem mag or the .35/ 284 or wait for the new 2003 browning lighting which is supposed to be rechambered to .358 win. Believe me the .358 will do anything you want to do in a 20"bbl. I know for a fact from pratical field ecxperience.
