I bought a Pre 64 model 70 for my christmas gift. I took the action out of the stock tonite and found that the stock was cracked. The crack is in the small piece of wood between the trigger and the mag box. I would like some help from you experts fixing this thing up. Do you think a wood glue would work or I would acraglas be better. With acraglas I could build up the area on the bottom about 1/8 inch and on the trigger side some without interfearing with anything. I think the whole action will need to be bedded also. I'm not a gunsmith or a stock maker, but I did spend last night in a Holiday Inn Express, and I'd use a Dremel tool or drill to make an elongated cut fairly deep across the split. I'd then put the stock, protected from marring appropriately, in a vise or clamp, and tighten it up. Hopefully, the split will disappear.

Then I'd cut a piece or two of threaded material from a bolt that would would drop into the cut/slot with some room around it. I'd fill the cut with epoxy a little less than half way, or if its deep a third of the way, drop the threaded stock into the cut, and fill in above it with epoxy. If its deep, I'd fill in another third and drop in the second piece of stock, and fill in above it.

If you are going to bed the action, I'd leave the level of epoxy just below the level of the wood, and let the epoxy set up. I think this will re-inforce the stock and prevent any further spliting. Ku-dude

If you are referring to the piece of wood between the guard and mag box when looking from the top down, about 90% of all pre 64 Model 70s are cracked in that spot and I have yet to see that make any difference in accuracy. You might try shooting it first to see how it does. If you want to preserve collectors value and feel you must do something with it, I wouldn't get to extravagant.

Acraglass is great stuff, I have repaired several old guns with cracked wood. Prep it, goop it, clamp it.
