hoss101Rebarreling to 250 Savage..need advice
I`m going to rebarrel a Mark X Mauser (currently 22-250) to .250 Savage for my 13 year old son. I would prefer not to spend over about $400 doing this. My mind is set on the .250 Savage, so please, no caliber recommendations. Please let me know which brand of barrel and a gunsmith that I can use and stay within my price range. If available, I would really appreciate telephone numbers or websites.
Thanks

Lucky ShotGo to Midway. I think a short chambered barrel will be about $95 if it isn't on sale and have a smith chamber it and finish it and I think you will come in under the $400. Or have it rebored to 25.

Lucky ShotWell I checked Midway and they don't list a 250 sav but they have 243, or 260 so those might be options...

<Roundbutt>Hoss the .250 Savage has a short neck and is limited to light bullets. If a 257 Roberts would fit it would be more versatile. Also brass or loaded ammo cost less for the 257.

Art S.The sad fact of life is that, if you look around and keep your eys open, you can probably find a used .250 of some sort for $400.

<JP Terp>Check with Pac Nor and Douglas. They both make and install quality barrels. The 250 is a great cartridge - Don't let anyone talk you out of it.

Try the links below for Pac-Nor and Douglas. You can do a search for others on dogpile or goggle.
Both of these companies will fit their barrels to your action. You could probably save a few bucks by getting a local smith do the work, over these internet prices.I(beware of the $50 rebarrel job though

) You could also possibly save a few bucks going with stainless over blued.
By the way I really like the 250 savage idea.
I just rebarreled a m700 in 250 savage AI. Used a Pac-nor lightweight stainless.
It was a real toss up for me as to weather to go with the standard or improved. It was a matter of the barrel being in the lathe and closing my eyes and picking up a reamer.
Also as stated earlier you could probably find a good used 250 savage for $400 or less. I believe I have seen m721's on the auction sites for that kind of money.
On the other hand rebarreling the mark-x would be more fun.
Good Luck in your endeavor

U may want 2 check with The Montana Rifleman
They make their own barrels and will chamber that cartridge 4U.

<Roundbutt>I would stick with the 237 Roberts. in its day the 250-3000 was great but today just OK. For a person with one center fire gun why limit yourself to a gun just OK for deer.
A 257 Roberts can be used for varmints, deer, antelope, black bear, sheep or goat. A .243 or .260 would also be superior to the 350-3000. Remember he is 13 and this may be his only rifle for a while.

edi malinaricJust to put in a good word for the 250-3000 - although there are something like 30+ Springbok, a few Mountain Reedbuck and the odd Fallow Deer that will disagree with me.
Last August I allowed an engineer friend of mine to use it. He pleaded for me to sell him the rifle and, when he realised that I was serious about turning him down, he said " At least promise me that you will leave it to me in your will!"
A nice calibre - teach your son to shoot accurately and he will not be disappointed.
Stick to your guns - cheers edi

hoss101I just found a like new Savage 99A in 250 Savage for less than I was willing to spend on a rebarrel

So, for now at least, the 22-250 will remain intact. I know there are better calibers for deer, but the Savage is just so mild mannered and easy to shoot, I think it`s about perfect for small-medium deer at moderate ranges for younguns.
Hoss 101; Actually there isn't any "bettercartridge" for deer.
Good luck!

<BigBob>hoss101,
I've rebarreled several rifles and have never had a problem with any top grade barrel from a well known maker. The last two were Douglas XX target barrels turned to a medium weight. have been very happy with both. Good luck.
PS. I dont know what this cost in your are, but around Albuquerque a finished job, out the door is about $350.00.
