Using the serial number
Gents:

Can one use the serial number on say a Classic Model 70 to determine when it was built? If so, can anyone direct me to resources for this purpose? Looking at a Model 70 in 300 Win Mag for my 375 H&H project.

Thanks.

Thanks. I have only the beginning of it: G173000. G Series? At any rate, it's a Classic and I am going to be discussing it with Mark Penrod to see if he may be willng to work on it for me.

I have not found a source to look up any of the newer production rifles, ones that start with the "G".
The link that was given is a good resource for the older Rifles but when you get into the 1980's and newer I haven't found a way.
For reference I have a .243 in M70 G16815XX made in about 1983 pushfeed, I have a M70 pushfeed 30/06 laminated stock made in about 1986-7 and its serial number is G18149xx, a .338 Super Grade "classic" (not pushfeed) made prior to 1999 G1465xx, a .375 Stainless "Classic" (not pushfeed) made prior to 2003 G3426xx.
I hope these help, I think yours was probably made in the early 2000's.
