I have been reading here for a bit and really enjoy the site. I want to start reloading and I know I will learn a lot from here. I also want to thank the administrators for providing this forum.

I have a problem. I had a custom Remington 700 ADL rebarreled to 338-06 [IDT out of Ohio, they did an awesome rebarrel job, but they do not do stock work]. So, the last step was to mate a Bell & Carlson Medallion stock to the barreled action and install an HS Precision steel detachable magazine floor plate. I took it to a local gunsmith -- and asked him to do it for me. Well, I got the call it was ready, went to pick it up and examined it. The bolt release wouldn't work, and the radiuses on the stock for the floorplate and trigger guard don't match. Not even close. It looks like crap! I put a lot of time and money in this project, researching the various components, etc. Pride of ownership is a very big part of the rifles I own.

So, the question is: Is there a gunsmith anyone can recommend that I can send this to that would take pride in their workmanship and fix this up for me? Any recommendations would be gratefully appreciated. I realize some gunsmiths might not want to fix a problem, but I want to try and see. Maybe bedding compound is all that is needed. I don't know.

I had one on a 700BDL. It took a ton of work. The bolt hit the comb and I had to open it up in a bunch of areas. I had to grind a few thous from the aluminum block to get the bolt stop to work, and grind a ton out to get the trigger to function. These all void the warranty. Once done the stock worked OK. I would call Kevin Weaver first at Weaver Rifles, he has a web site. 1st class guy, does nice work. IMO the best on the east coast is Alex Sitman, Master Class Stocks., he has a site also. He makes his own stock and does mostly High Techs. I do not know if he will work a B/C for you. Get your wallet ready, this is going to cost 2-3 hundred bucks for a pro to do it.

I have had him do quite a bit of work for me and have never been disappointed, I don't think you would be either if he will, as you say, repair someone elses screw up.

I just might dump the B&C stock altogether -- and buy an HS Precision Sporter (supposed cut specifically for the floorplate they manufacture as well).

It is not dificult at all to glass-bed the bottom metal to get a perfect match.. If the stock is painted black and you use black dye in the glass it often is hard to even notice but you can always repaint the stock after it's bedded.
