Looking for new stock for 7mag
I'm not sure this is the section for this topic, but here goes. I own a Winchester model 70 7mm Rem mag classic controlled round feed that was manufactured in the mid 1990's, The synthetic stock that it came with has a length of pull that is a bit too long for me. I am 5-10, and weigh about 190, with a good deal more muscle than the average person. Unfortunately, I've also had 3 operations on the right shoulder due to a torn rotator cuff and bicep tendon. I have been looking for a replacement stock with a shorter length of pull, a high tech recoil pad, and more contact surface than the original stock. I have been in touch with midway, winchester, and several other stock makers. It seems that all replacement stocks for model 70's are made for the newer, one piece trigger guard and floor plate assemblies. I am willing to go to either a synthetic or laminated replacement, any suggestions?

If the only thing holding you back is the one piece bottom metal, just get some new stuff and install it. A good recoil pad would help also, a Pachmayer Decellerator for instance, added to your stock.

As Jim has said...a better recoil pad can be installed. However since the factory standards are 13 1/2" to 13 5/8" a shorter stock with your stature could result in scope eye. Going with a shorter stock may is possible but requires some internal stock reinforcement so you can attach the new pad. Williams here in Oregon make the one piece metalwork. I talked to then just recently and they are making them as fast as they can. They also were the source for the original Winchester contract. As to getting more surface for shoulder placement....custom stockmaking may be your only option. All of the factorry patterns are influenced by Custom Stockmakers of Note...such as Jim Kobe, Gary Goudy, Al Lind, Fred Wenig David Miller, John Sundra...etc.

How is your shoulder doing? I just had my right shoulder repaired for the third time two days ago and the Dr was not particularly optimistic that this will be the last time.

I haven't shot anything larger than a .22 in over two years.

Call D'Arcy Echols and order a McMillan stock from him. It's a fantastic stock for recoil control among other things.
