Best for open sight use?
What do you think is the best type of stock for open sight use?

Like on the CZ 550 is the american stock or the hogback better for open sights?

They are both set up for scope use. The part of the comb where your cheek welds is about the same height on both stocks. The Hogsback has a lower butt, to help control recoil. The American has a high butt, which is often favored for varmiting.

The best stock for iron sight use has a low comb in addition to a low butt. The best examples can be found on Brno 21 and 22, and pre-war Mausers, Mannlichers and Winchesters.

If you can not find a stock with a low comb, just use higher sights. Modern iron sights, such as made by ERA (NECG), are about the same height as a low scope would be.

Jarrod,

A whole bunch has to do with your your own body style as well as the way you naturally hold the rifle when shooting.

It normally doesn’t take allot of effort to slightly raise or lower your head enough to accommodate a scope and/or iron sights with most stocks unless they are quite radical in the comb area.

Kind of what I was meaning though are there certain stocks built built more with open site use in mind

Jarrod,

If you’re talking about factory stocks you have to keep in mind that they have to try and hit a happy medium with drop at the heel and comb since they don’t have the slightest idea what type of sighting system the owner will put on the rifle. Same is true for LOP on a factory stock...its a “one-size-fits-all“ proposition most times. I think most factory rifles nowadays are designed under the assumption that they will probably have a scope mounted.

Remember, you are only talking about fractions of an inch difference in the drop at the heel and comb when going from a scope to iron sights, or visa versa.
