Who does A-Bolt re-barrels? My brother has a long action and I have a short action that both need barrels. I'm thinking Pac-Nor barrel, he's thinking Krieger. (Not that I don't like Krieger!)

Don, how about a nice octagon barrel by Mark Stratton? Now that would look nice on a browning.

Mine is a plastic-stocked light rifle that I'm thinking of re-barreling in 6.5-08 or something similar, as it is a .308 Win right now and there would be no feeding issues.

Dan's is a 300 WinMag, and I think he wants to stay there. Both of us are after accurate, no-frills hunting rifles.

That octagon barrel should go to somebody who cares!

It is always advisable to start any project requiring accuracy as square as possible.

Does the A-Bolt-II have a nut where the barrel meets the receiver?

Or is that part of the barrel?

You are rebarreling....this means you have shot it with the previous barrel.....and how did it shoot with the previous barrel?...If it shot well why do you want to do anything but rebarrel.

I am not at all convinced that "squaring" an action is a terribly valuable thing to do. If it's done right it can't hurt you but IMO it's something I'd do for a benchrest action where gaining a 1/4" on groups is a big return.

It's your gun and your money.....be your own judge.

It shot well with the previous barrel, but it was picky as to loads and bullets.

One of the best things about a blueprinted setup is that they are often less finicky.

FWIW, since you've got the rifle apart, you may as well take a few thousandths off the receiver face to square it up. Why not? It's relatively cheap, easy, and quick.

I had all my Mauser actions squared up. May as well right?

Most 'smiths have the jigs and tooling to square up Rems, Wins and Mausers.

Get into an off-brand like the A-Bolt and they don't have the tooling, so they often just "check" it.
