How are the Montana 1999s holding up?
Howdy. I was curious to see how the Montana 1999s out there are working. Any problems so far? I've searched through the archives, found a few reviews of the action itself but not much on actual performance and longevity. I'd like to hear from those of you who have put the 1999 through its paces.

Well, let me say up front that this reply is one week early. That said, I feel pretty good about mine so far. I have built a .375 Taylor on a CM, long action, magnum face M1999 with a Shilen #4 barrel 23 inches long. It has been stocked in a Rimrock stock. I haven't weighed it, but it definitely feels light (and very well balanced, too) for a .375. I'll take it to the range on Saturday, so I'll try to repost after I actually shoot it. My gunsmith has worked on one other M1999, which was built into a 6.5-284. He was not impressed with the first M1999, apparently because of poor lug contact and base holes which were slightly off center. He also re-cut the threads. He said mine was much better, didn't take much to true the lugs. The trigger is breaking very clean at 3 lbs. It SEEMS to feed and extract OK, but let's wait for the real world test to pass judgement. I had a relatively small amount of inletting to fit it into the Rimrock stock. Prior to having it barreled, I had stoned the rails and it slicked up very nice. If anything, the extractor fits a little loose on the case head, but I don't think it will be a problem.

I don't know if I'm more excited about the wildcat chambering or how the M1999 will perform, but I can't wait to find out. I'll probably have a very long string attached to the trigger for that first round..... :-)

I think you will enjoy your 375 Taylor.
mine is on a 1909 Arg. Mauser, in a
Boyd JRS laminated stock. It is a
delight to shoot. After the first
fireing of the brass I only size
enough to get an easy chambering,
the brass lasts forever.
