<Al Smith>Building a custom .300 RUM
I'm considering starting a new project. I want to build a new .300 RUM with a 28" tube. I'm thinking of using a Rem 700 action and wanted to know if any one has done this. Is there any "surprises" that I will run into? Is there enough room in the magazine box to seat the bullets out towards the lands, etc...
Thanks for any info,
Al Smith

RobgunbuilderGood decision. I've built two so far on trued Rem 700 actions. I have the following suggestions: 1. Have the action completely trued, including recutting the threads ( not just re-tapping them),truing the locking lugs and putting in a SAKO extractor in the bolt. 2. Use a 28-30 inch Kreiger,Hart or Lilja SS barrel, No 5 contour, 1-10 twist. Have the barrel threaded for a muzzel break. You can always deceide not to use it. You can buy a RUM magazine box from Brownells as well as a magnum follower. Make sure your gunsmith recuts the action threads and the barrel threads using the same lathe. Make sure he has done this before.3 use a Holland or Tubb recoil lug. 4. Put a jewell trigger on the rifle.5. Use a stock with a aluminum bedding block and steel bed the tang, recoil lug and first inch of the barrel. Thats my recipe for success. Good luck-Rob

<gone hunting>i would agree with all the above except the SAKO extracter i much prefer the M16 unit.

remboI've been toying with the same idea, except maybe going with the 338 Ultra.I'd leave my Remington extractor as is.For an estimated 1000 rounds of 300 Win Mag it has never been a problem in this action.I'll probably put it into a Choate Plaster stock.Question, these stocks are a blind magazine style. DO you need an ADL mag box(longer) or will the BDL work? I think a person could just duplicate the side cutouts in the original box or be satisfied with 2 in the box. How large at the muzzle is a #5 contour?
