Ebony Schnabel fore-end

Has any one ever seen a rifle that had stock with a Ebony Schnabel fore-end? I have never seen it but think it would look good.

I have an Austrian Voere 98 in 9.3x64 that has a rosewood schnabel and gripcap. Very nice indeed. Identical to one on this link, except a smaller scope. Voere

I have a custom Brno ZG-47 and a Sako L-57 with ebony schnabble forend tips. They both look great. I can email pics if you want.

Here is a pic of mine; I stole the idea from Sabi Rifles -- some of the pics of their rifles on their home page have ebony schnabels.

The pics don't do it justice, it looks better in person. The tip is rather long, because I had to cut the forearm so short to get rid of the Richard's white line spacer 45 degree rosewood tip abomination. I think if you are going to do this, you should leave it a little longer than usual, or it will look strange.

The rifle is a 7x57, stamped as a 275 Rigby. All shaping was done with a bench top belt/disc combo sander, and a dremel tool with 1/2 x 1/2" sanding drum (I'm not kidding).

I decided I'd share my gun with the forum.

The gun was built by Duane Wiebe and engraved by Charles Lee. Those of you who were at the ACGG show last week might have noticed it on Duane's table. The barreled action started out as an Armour International mauser in 7x64, which is identical to the legacy. Duane welded a new bolt handle on, recontoured the receiver to take Warne rings, and generally cleaned up the action. The stock is Bastogne walnut, checkered 24 LPI. The forend tip was my own idea.

The rifle shoots as good as it looks, and is a pleasure to carry. I have not yet shot any game with it, but my daughter and I have been doing some pig hunting, so soon I hope.

I don't know about you guys, but personally I find ebony almost "too much". I know it is a matter of taste, but I find ebony almost "dead" - being as black as it is. I prefer a contrasting foreend/gripcap with some figure in it. There are a ton of options (rosewood, ironwood etc etc).

Dave "Loud-and-Boomer"'s rifle would be very close to my ideal too. IMHO the slim and elegant forearm was sometimes forgotten in US custom rifles of late. I like hefty forearms for their feel, but the slim ones sure look nicer [Big Grin]
