Depends whose SA you are talking about. Winchester, no problem. Remingtons can be opened up enough to make it worthwhile with the 6.5-284, but usually the 260 Rem is a better bet (same with Savages, at least the newer true short actions and the original short actions, and Browning A bolts. I don't know about CZ, I have never seen one of their short actions, don't even know if it is a true short action or a long action with a spacer. Intermediate Mausers are ideal in length, but will usually require work for proper feeding. FWIW - Dan

Dan's got it about right. The .284 was built by Browning on a Sako L579 and it worked okay, but that's because the .284 usually uses short-for-caliber bullets, with the 125 being the most common in factory loads.

On the other hand, if you intend to use 140 grain bullets in a 6.5-284, the magazine length of the L579 (and Remington 7, 700, etc.) would be uncomfortably short.

Since "SA" (make not specified) could be almost anything, we have to note that the MRC M1999 SA will take cartridges of length all the way up to 3.150" - i.e. all the way up to 6.5x55, and definitely the 6.5-284.

Dan at MRC even told me that their SA will accomodate a 6.5x300WSM... which is what I'm having my lefty chambered to.

Don't forget the 6.5 Rem Mag.....I've never been that fond of the round, but it does work in short actions.

Our Short Actions will handle anything up to 3.125" long. We will have a couple of versions of it. One with a .473 bolt face for the 243 Winchester, 308 Winchester etc as well as one set up for the Winchester Short Magnums with a .534" bolt face. So whatever you have in mind, we've probably got an action for it already or have them coming soon.

I have to agree with Don Bellisle. The 6 mm Remington is a much better choice for the short action than the 6.5 X 284.

The OAL of 6.5 X 284 set up for long distance will use every bit of a long action. Of course shooting the heavier 6 mms can extend the OAL of the 6mm as well. Really don't see the advantage to a short action for either caliber.

You could try the "new" 260 rem. it is what used to be known as the 6.5/308 it used to be a wild cat (un available dies and shells) but is now common and offered as the 260 rem and it is a nice shooting cartridge! It is a short action. good luck, Brent

CZ does not make short action rifles. Just long actions with a bolt stop/spacer.
