Checkering Bolt Handles
Friends-

Who besides Jerome Glimm specializes in checkering and engraving bolt handles?

I have a couple of Jerome's handles and they are top notch, however, I checked his web-site and see he is no longer doing bolt handles.

I was thinking of branching out a bit, anyway. I realize that it is a small niche.

Thanks in advance.

Mark

I used Baldwin bolt Jeweling and checkering and was extremely satisfied.

He checkered as ell as lengthened a Mauser bolt handle for me.

Mark,

If you are wanting to make your own bolt handles and do the checkering I have a PDF file on how I make my own.

Les, thank you for your response. Your bolt handles are pieces of art. I am really looking for someone that I would pay to do the work.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,

Here is a 3 panel knob for a small aciton. Is this more inline with what you are wanting? I wish I could get more people to try engraving simple bolt knobs. It is not that hard to learn. I made this bolt and engraved the panels a couple of months ago to find out if I could see well after eye surgery.

That bolt is absolutely stunning. I apologize for the request, but I would really appreciate any instructions you could give about the method of checkering the bolt handle.

Les, if you are willing to share that PDF with me on how you checker bolt knobs I would love to learn!

Thanks ahead of time.

The files are both about 10 pages long and if you will send a PM with your email address I can send these out fast on Hotmail.com. You can enlarge the PDF files to see details. You need to understand how to sharpen engravers and I have a file that shows how to make your own tools. A little practise and you can learn how to start with a hammer and graver.

How are you doing after your eye surgery? Did everything work out the way you had hoped?

I had cataract surgery one my right eye. I can see well enough to do most things now. At first I thought we might loose the site, but it finally healed up. Two hrs and 5 stitches later to do a cataract does require someone that knows his job. I feel the Dr. knew what we were up against as I have had both retinas split in the past. If you look out at the sky and see a shotgun pattern in the blue sky it is time to see the Dr. quick or you could loose the site.

Well, its a great thing that they were able to help you so that you can see, even if not perfectly.

By the way, I would bet that you would have a nice little market for those checkered bolt handles you have shown if you decided to sell a few. They really are nice. Especially the one shown in the last photo.
