I rebuilt one of the Savage 7mm-08's and it was a tack driver with 1.5 holes for 2 shots.
Scope died on the last trip to all over the paper.Savage is the 110 model and not the Axis.

The scope was the cheap Nikon 3-9x40 that cam with the gun. It will go out today to Nikon Friday. Yes all the screws were tight.

I have an Remmington 700 in 270 with an old VariX 3 scope from the 80's that works just like it did back in the day.

Leopold mounts are a little pricey. Rifle has Ar style mount with two small AR connectors and not the solid ar base.

What is a good base and rings for the Savage would work for this rifle? What size steel rings for this scope?

I like weaver steel 2 piece mounts. they are called grand slam. function the same as the aluminum weavers.

s46 and S61 but double check weaver. they are in the $30 range for a set. aluminum will be about $12...brownells price

Weaver steel bases cost about the same as Leopold. So you are not gaining anything there. If you want the cheapest, get the Weaver aluminum bases and cheap rings.
A set of leupold bases and rings will be about $50. Get Medium rings, one inch, although Low will probably work with that scope.
As Rich said, can't go wrong with the Grand Slam rings and bases either.

The 1 and only savage I have is an axis in 308 leupold 1 piece base & had to use the extended front ring to get the scope back far enough. 3x9 vari xII

I used an EGW Picatinny rail and Leupold rings, very happy with the set up.

Those old Leupold 3x9 scopes only have about 3 foot of internal adjust to them

If I had a dollar for everyone I had to shim the bases on to get the scope centered.

I would look at the Buris rings with the inserts in them

Which is why I recommend Leopold or Redfield bases; they have built in windage adjustment; and if the issue is in elevation, (less often) either machine the base down, or use pop can shim stock if you can't alter the bases. From the bottom, not the top.
If your receiver is not true, or drilled wrong.

dpcd's methods are what I've used previously, but have become enthusiastic about the Burris signature rings, too, which fit in the windage bases.

Their eccentric inserts may only give 20 thou shimming but, combined with milling the front base, may be a great help. I hear that the amount the bases can be milled is limited by the ring dovetail touching the receiver, meaning some shimming at the back can still be required on occasions.
