Re: 2 v. 3 position mauser safety
Another vote for the two position that is either on or off. I also favor my rifles to lock the bolt closed while the safety is on. I don't want any surprises when I bring the rifle up to shoot such as a bolt that has lifted with the safety on.

When I unload a rifle, if it doesn't have a floorplate that opens I simply work the bolt foward and reverse until all rounds are out of the magazine. Using this method on my Springfields, Model 70s, and Mausers I never fully chamber a round and the striker is blocked the entire time so even though the safety is in the off position the rifle cannot fire.

I might add that I prefer the PME safety lever that Mr. Kobe uses because it is hardened which makes for a smooth operation and it holds up well. They are what are on most all of my Springfields and Mausers.

I've had both and prefer a 3 position. It's like OLDSARGE say's, put in full lock for traveling and half lock for hunting. IMO the 3 position safeties appear to be stronger to me. When you cut into the shroud for the 2P safety there isn't a whole lot of metal left on the top.

I like the original flag style three position Mauser safety. But, since it isn't conducive to scope use, I use the FN two position left side safety or their equivilent. I modify them so that the action can be opened/cycled with the firing pin blocked. I like to be able to cycle the action with the pin blocked. Comes in handy for unloading.
