What is a fair price for a one sided blank. Half the price if it was two sided? Perhaps less?

Less than half, a lot less. I have seen one sided blanks that would go $700 if the other side matched but there is no way I would pay $350 if the other side was not equivalent. More like 1/4 but it does depend on what the other side is like. If the bad side is close then it may even be at half or a bit more. Not an easy call. Sounds like I am vascillating but it is not an easy task to grade wood. I would think of it more that the poor side is upgraded in price somewhat by the best side.

One thing to think of, Acrabond can make a laminate out of that for you and the sides will match. I have seen them when Mel Smart owned the business and they are very difficult to tell from a regular blank. Keep that in mind. Particularly with a big discrepancy in sides.

I think I got it, but really, the only one-sided thing that I know of is a "Moebus" band.

great joke, but a mobeous is the only 3 diminsional object with only TWO side... edge and flat....

Thanks. I'm looking to help a friend who's interested in a Acra-bond stock to go along with a MRC short action. I was hoping to help him get the most bang for the buck in regards to a stock. I stopped in and ordered a acrabond awhile back in Bastogne and look forward to it's arrival. Rod explained how he can often get two good slices out of a one sided blank and that lead me to thinking of helping him find one. I suppose the next step would be to send off some inquirys to different dealers to see what they have.

Is there any kind of trade show stockmakers attend to buy wood? I'm aware of the ACCG show in Reno, but judging by the photo's I've seen you and Jbelk post on HA I'm quesing the dealers bring their high end stuff.

Did you ask Rod what he might offer you? Or was he too expensive? I know he has quite a few blanks lying around for sale.

I had no problem finding a AA Bastogne blank I like from Rods selection. What I'm thinking is a one sided blank would have lessor value to a convential wood dealer. Say a AAA blank that would normally go for $300 with two good sides can be had $100, laminated it and your in for $200. That same blank if it can produce two good sides is still valued at a AAA price to someone who laminates it and it should be as the end product is a AAA product. I'm just exploring some possibilitys.

Sometimes really good things happen. Cut into a piece of scrap and WOW! the kerf line showed something outstanding. Turned those to sides to the outside and it became a special selection that sold for $660 in 48 hours.

Almost every piece of wood seems to have a "strong" side. We cut in 7/8 of an inch behind the strong side and "hope" it holds that deep. Most of the time it works out, and then both sides of the laminated blank become identical. Sometimes it's a little less, but you still gain because both sides are "stronger" than the weak side of the parent blank.

Once in a while, it's a washout...like when you find a .30 caliber FMJ bullet that tumbled through the grain structure, slice the bullet too, and wreck the blade on the resaw at the same time.

Stronger means more fiddle, figure, color, grain, rays, burl, etc.
