I was on a rough country hunt last weekend and my Sako Hunter sustained a coupe of scratches on the blueing, one on the bolt handle and one on the barrel. Can these rough spots be buffed out? Will the whole rifle need to be reblued? Thanks.

On some of the "cold" blueing solutions, you can use succesive lighter grades of emery on the scratches until it matches the surrounding area and then follow the directions to the letter on the blueing solution and it will do a pretty good job. I once reblued the entire side of Browning A-5 barrel and perfectly matched the color and the finish. It had been sitting in a garage in a cold South Dakota winter, taken from a warm house by a ditsy houskeeper that thought a gun might involuntarily jump up and shoot her and the kids.

Novak Blue Wonder. I've been playing with this stuff on a few guns lately and am very impressed with the results. So far I've completely refinished a bolt rifle, a shotgun barrel and a carbine barrel still mounted on the frame.

All have come out better than I could have expected. I've tried the other stuff and was never satisfied with color matching or level of blue. This stuff really works. I used a heat gun first and then went a bought a small propane torch to make it easier.
