Re: Browning Rifle Help Please
I can't believe that you can't find anyone to restock the rifle for you. The B78 is the single shot, right?

I can't see why you wouldn't be able to take the cheekpiece down and still have a symetrical stock. I would take a good look around the perimeter of the cheekpiece to make sure that they didn't machine or file below the surface of the stock plane. You will also need to refinish the forend to match the butt.

Getting a stock made shouldn't be all that difficult. But try cutting it down first .Re finishing the fore end is necessary because Browning likes to put a dye in the finish which is hard to match.

AlanC,
Are you talking about taking off the Monte Carlo ( the hump on top) or the cheekpiece on the side? Both can be done fairly easily. Taking off the Monte Carlo will change the fit slightly. I owned one of those in 30/06 and it shot extremely well, was bit heavy though.

They used a high gloss finish on them if memory serves me. I refinished mine in oil because I could not stand the high gloss.

Alan....

As Chic posted above.......you can remove both cheekpiece and Monte Carlo "hump". As I remember, the aft end of the cheekpiece curls up into the Monte Carlo....and is rather prominently projected at that end.

The line you will want to establish when removing the cheekpiece is the line from the butt forward 'till it meets the existing cheekpiece. You basically will want to extend this line on a plane until it blends into the grip just below the comb nose.

You will also want to establish a line from the top of the butt to the top of the comb nose.....indicating how much of the Monte Carlo "hump" you will be removing.

If you do some quick checking and measuring......you will see how much wood you will be removing, and how it will affect the fit of the stock. I presume more than you might suspect. Probably some lower scope mounts would be in order, and depending on whether any cast off currently exits in the butt......you may affect your eye to ocular bell alignment by removing the cheekpiece.

I've modified existing stocks to remove Monte Carlo "humps".....although I've only modified the shape of cheekpiece rather than removing.
