Bulged shotgun barrel
I have come upon a beretta O/U silver snipe with a bulge. The gun is otherwise in excellent condition.

Is it possible to repair the bulge or will it have to be replaced?

Thanks, John

It may be possible to repair your barrel set. It will not be cheap and not cost effective on a silver snipe. The ribs will need to be removed, the bulge pushed back in. The bore will need to be honed then the barrel shortened. They get longer when the buldge is pushed in due to the metal being stretched. The ribs will need to be re-layed. Then you will need to blue the barrel set. All of this is dependant on the bulge..... If it can be pushed in and the bore honed so that you still have a safe wall thickness!!!!! It would be about the same money to sleeve the bulged barrel. This is not a job for your average gunsmith. You will probably be money ahead to buy another barrel set and have it fit to your action

Ropes,
The integrity of the metal where it is "pushed in" is never the same as the original barrel and the bulge often comes back, if not completely, at least partially.

It is also very possible that the gun is entirely safe to use as is. I would sure temper my loads you are using in it and monitor the diameter of the barrel at the bulge. It is very unlikely that you will experience any catastrophic explosion of the barrel if you use conservative ammo.

It is not difficult to have the barrel thickness measured at the bulge. Find a smith with the proper tool. I got mine a few years ago and although it has had little use, it is an interesting conversation piece. Smiler
