more firepower
gents:

out of interest and a slow afternoon I was noticing something in a ballistic comparison. I have been kicking around the idea of a rebarrel from 30 06 to 338-06 to use in my M70.

using factory magazine capacities, there is an argument that the 338-06 packs more firepower than a 338 win mag. play along:

338-06: 250 grains @ 2550 = 3,611 fpe(5)= 18055

338 wm: 250 @ 2700 = 4,048(4)= 16192

based on the above math, the former brings 1863 more fpe to the game in a lighter, handier package with less recoil. it appears quite a few members are rather enamored of this cartridge as a general purpose NA round! how about you? and yes, i did not include the 9.3 x 62 since neither 338 throws a 286 grainer, but that would certainly change the equation. however, I do not know if the 9.3 with a 250 grain bullet rovides the same ranging capabilities of the 338s. whatever. just trying to start a conversation.

Your math in the two examples above seem to be a little off, and this from a high school drop out myself. Big Grin Am I reading your examples correctly?

Seems if one is going to empty the rifle into the animal, then the '06 is the winner in FP's delivered, but who's gonna clean up the mess?

I see the point, but of the two, I'd be more interested in which one was flatter, in which case, the 338WM might win both the trajectory and punch categories, per round, not capacity.

FWIW, I rarely put more than three rounds down, but then I haven't hunted NA dangerous game.

I guess I look at this magazine capcity issue a little different than most. I was taught to employ the whole weapon should I find myself without ammo. Based on this, one can't figure overall firepower without figuring in the attitude of the shooter, and a few well placed butt strokes. Big Grin

even if the .338-06 was a machine gun it would never equal or "best" the .338 Win Mag....

If you have to shoot the fifth time then the problem is not the cartridge.....!

my calcs came from the Bear tooth Bullets web page using their tools found in the Ballistician's Corner section.

My point was just adding up the numbers produced in terms of sheer theoretical fpe the 338-06 wiht one more round carries more. However, it seems that in reality users of the round have reported 338 wm-like field performance within 150 yards or so on game animals. Thus, why not use one in a lighter, handier package?

2550 fps in a 338-06 with 250 gr is rather fast. Nosler guide 6 lists just a hair over 2400 at max which works out to 3197 FPE. 3197 x 5 = 15985 which is less than the 4 rounds of 338 WM (16192)

By the same logic:

.223 Rem with 55gr BT= 3240 FPS or 1282 FPE x 30 round clip= 38460

You're not being a smart ass, just applying the same parameters. Do you "spray and pray" or place one quality shot? I think the logic of applying the total available energy in a magazine is flawed.

nobody said to apply the total available energy in the magazine. I merely said what the available energy was. and a 223 rem does not make it as a legal caliber for game animals typically shot with 338s; i.e. elk and bear.

my 250/2550 figure was drawn from reports of other AR users I've spoken to.

But only if you "apply the total available energy in the magazine"... (which you weren't suggesting of course)

Sorry, now I'm the one coming across as a smart-ass! (how does one make that little pot stirring smiley-face come up?)

We get what you are saying jsl3170, I just think it's an academic point. Interesting discussion concerning firepower available, but there's little real meaning to it unless you plan to empty the magazine.

Aw, hell I didn't even have a point when I wrote it. I've just been thinking about the caliber and figured I'd think in digital for awhile.

Here is the math I use to determine the overall "terminal" potential of a gun on todays battlefield. 1 Marine + 1 round = 72 ugly virgins. With 5 rounds it would be 360 ugly virgins. Big Grin
