crowning
How important is it to have a crowned barrel? I just noticed today that I have a rifle that has no crown as far as I can tell.
By my definition, It does have a crown; even if it is flat, it is a crown. Muzzle crowns can be any shape you want as long as it is concentric and perpendicular with the bore. I assume you mean your muzzle is not cut at any angle, or rounded. Those are meant to protect the rifling. Many target barrels are cut flat, 11 degrees, recessed; different ways. If the rifle shoots well, it doesn't matter. Others might say something else.

I agree. My BR barrels are cut flat and perpendicular to the bore.

Toomany ToolsDoesn't matter what shape it is, just that it is even and concentric; and even that sometimes doesn't matter.

AtkinsonWell I want a crown of some kind on my barrels, I hunt with them and its a fact that many barrels get nicks in the flatter crowns, lots of old Win. did from rough handling..Its a pretty darn good idea and has no downside that I know of. Most bench rest rifles have a "benchrest crown" flat but with an angle cut of varying degrees and depth, to the riflings.
