Barrel life of stainless vs. chrome moly?
Thinking about a .257 Weatherby and wondering if this tough-on-throats caliber would "last longer" with a stainless versus CM barrel. Any advice?

Bill,

Stainless steel wears slightly faster, but the throat erodes faster on chrome moly.

Stainless is softer (friction wear is higher), but more resistant to heat and less brittle, so less prone to micro cracks that erode the throat.

For a hot caliber like the .257 Weatherby, I guess I think there'd be an advantage to stainless. You might heat that barrel up with several quick shots, but you'll never likely fire the thousands of rounds needed to wear the bore out.

More important is which one got the most tender loving care in letting it cool between shots for instance, the blazing away boys and they are many can cook a throat in a hurry..
