Tips and suggestions for bedding the light contour barrel mtn. rifle factory stock with the detachable magazine would be appreciated. Are there special treatments for the magazine well? It looks like an area to get locked with the glass??

I previously removed the pressure pad and accuracy improved so I expect to free float the barrel. How much of this light barrel should be glassed 1"-2"?

I am about to do the same thing and I am curious as well.

Cut True oil 50-50 to start with...

First application: with thinned true oil apply all the oil it will take and then some basacilly soak it, then let it stand for 48 hours and wipe it off, then let stand for 30 days...then starting with 220 grit, wet sand down to 400 grit..let stand for a week and rub out with rotten stone and Pilkington red oil...

Basically thats how I use True oil...Pete Grissel told me about that 30 day cure right at the start, and its the best peice of advise I ever got in stock finishing...

Uh-oh. Ray has finally gone off the deep end.

2" would be fine for the barrel area. use modeling clay to damn the mag well area.
as far as the wood goes, use a wood sealant in the barrel channel.
i have had luck too freefloating the mountain barrels but i found full length bedding the barrel worked even better. if your gun shoots free floated dont muck with it. if the accuracy is not up to par or goes away, try bedding the whole barrel.

Aprreciate the advice Woofer. Now if I can figure out what Ray is cutting that Tru Oil with I'm good to go for a complete rework of the used factory stock I picked up for a descent price.

Just use a thinner when you cut 50/50. Just allows for better penetration

Ramrod, I plan to go over the checkering and touch up a few minor scratches on the factory finish. Do you think this will give a nice touch up to these areas. I want to avoid completely stripping the stock.

Looks like the dreaded "refinishing trojan" has infected the bedding program!
