maxbearLilja Barrel
I have a CZ 550 Magnum action that is brand new. I would like to have a Lilja full octagon barrel installed. Does anybody have any ideas as to how much a full octogon would weigh with a 26 inch barrel, and I am unsure of which "face" to order. I do not want any taper. 340 WBY.cal. Synthetic stock .Also not that I would ever need them but just in case my scope should fail I better have the smith install iron sights.I would really appreciate any help or Ideas as I am inexperianced with these kind of projects.

PoleaxIt would weigh a ton without any taper. You're talking about a 1.2" straight bbl or thereabouts. I'd guess no less than 11 lbs and probably more for the complete rifle.

PeglegWould make a decent unlimited barrel!

fyjA round 1.25 inch x 26 inch straight CM barrel blank weighs in around 10 pounds, give or take a couple of ounces depending on the caliber.

vanA 26" barrel in a .340 cal would weight this much. from 3.6ounces per inch to 4.4 ounces depending on the width across the flats of the barrel. So, say 4.4ounces X 26=114.4 Divided by 16=7.15 pounds. You will have a heavy gun,but it should hold steady, and you will need the stock inletted to new barrel as well. van

sharps54I had a Stainless Mdl 70 in .375 H&H rebarreled with a 22" full octagon barrel in 458 Lott by Montana Rifle Company a few years ago. It was indeed an ugly stick! The weight did keep recoil down but it was very front heavy. The barrel has since been taken off and the original one reinstalled. I don't have it here in VA with me or I would post pics of it. I would think you should have some taper in your barrel, 340 Weatherby really doesn't kick that much. I had a Weatherby synthetic in .340 WM and while noticable I didn't have any issues shooting it prone. I am 5'4" and was about 160lbs then so I'm not big (except my waist) by any standard.
As for the iron sights I discussed them with the 'smith at MRC at the time and since I wasn't sure what I wanted in sights we held off. It shouldn't be hard to dovetail the sights in your barrel if you don't get them right away but if you go with a full octagon I doubt the rifle will "point" very well, it will basically be a long range rifle.

Why don't you get in touch with Lilja and ask them. I'm sure they would be happy to sell you a barrel made to those specifications and will answer any questions you might have.

sbsmithGo to the Lilja website. Look in the barrels/products page where they talk about different profiles/contours and weights per inch. I believe they also have a formula for octagonal barrels.

I will contact Lilja.
I just wanted to see what you guys know about it. Believe me it helps me tremendously to hear what everyones experiances are. I like the look of a octogon barrel but it appears that maybe a full octogon will be to heavy.

maxbear, I'm glad you took my comments the way they were intended. I was not trying to be a wise ass.
Why don't you consider 1/2 round 1/2 octagon? That would save you a ton of weight and look great! Jim

maxbearJim White, I have considerd half round half octagon. I have decieded on a octagon barrel. Thanks Jim I guess I'll call Dan over at Lilja and see what he thinks. Do you know where a guy could look to find pictures of bolt action rifles with differant taper/face octagon barrels.
