Installing a front sight band
Guys,

What's the accepted best practice for installing a Ruger front sight band on a big rifle like a .458 AR?

Is supplied with a set screw that goes down the sight platform riser. Should it be silver soldered on a DGR?

Thanks,

Mike

This one was soldered using Brownell's hi-force 44 and has worked very well. It's stood about 100 rounds of 404 jeff and is still in place Smiler

The term silver soldering bothers me when used on a firearm as I'm most familiar with the kind that melts at past 1000 degrees (cherry red color) and just can't bring myself to do that to a barrel or action.

If your sight has a screw that can hold it in place while one does the soldering it can be a big help....this one is from NECG and didn't have a screw to hold it in place.

Was certainly thinking of the Force-44 solder (Ag-Sn) rather than the real stuff. Would not want to heat a barrel above its last heat treat temp.

That solder has a recommended flux.....use it as I wasn't successful in using ordinary flux with it.

I have the solder and the Comet flux. Is what I used to solder the recoil lug on with. Worked fine. Just had to get the fella warm enough after starting with everything very, very clean.

Just wondered if it was desirable/necessary to solder it rather than rely only on the set screw ... which sounded a bit "iffy" to me.

I would consider the screw as an aid in locating and holding the sight while soldering.

How do you keep from gettin solder or flux on the crown or into the bore while you're soldering the ramp on?

I cleaned both parts with acetone, fluxed both parts and run a little solder on the inside of the sight.....placed the sight in position (best I could) and heated it until the solder flowed to all the joint while I pushed the sight to rest using a wooden dowel.

Maybe I was lucky but there was no solder anywhere but between the pieces of metal.
