Reminton 721 refinish

A friend of mine inherited a Remington 721 in 30-06. He plans on giving the rifle to his son after he refinishes it. Does anyone have any idea how the original stocks were finished? Any stain? Oil finish? Suggestions? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Get some 120 grit stickyback paper and sand using a block until the old finish is removed, then 150 grit to finish sand....the stock is walnut (at least mine was) so don't stain it....use tru oil and hand rub the stuff in until it fills the pores....this takes many cotes and often needs a full day to dry between coats. Apply three coats and after thoroughly dry rub it off with medium steel wool. Apply finish and rub off until the pores are filled.

The thing should look pretty good by that time.....PM Soverns for a checkering job and walla....it'll be beautiful!

Thanks for the reply. My friend Tim will do. It belonged to his dad and it be a cherished heirloom to pass on to the grandson.
