sonofagunhole in barrel threads
I have a Rem 700 take-off barrel in 7mm Mag that has a small hole drilled clear thru the threads on one side into the chamber about 3/8" in front of the recoil lug shoulder.
What is it for? Is this barrel safe to use?

vapodogIt can be fixed, but IMO it's scrap!

It's an oil hole.
The fix is to cut that portion of the barrel off and re-do it. Ain't worth it.

sonofagunHate to ask a dumb question but...
what's an oil hole (for)?
I was going to guess it was for some kind of pressure gage.

djpaintlesHe's joking about the Oil hole.

Yup, it was a joke.

The hole was put there by someone who didn't know when to stop drilling. A few years ago I had a customer bring me 5 newly barreled Mauser 98 actions to tap. He had drilled the holes himself but didn't have a 6x48 tap. The knuckle head drilled into the chamber on all 5.
These were Douglas and Hart barrels. Luckily the barrels had enough cylinder to correct the mistakes. Albeit at a premium price. You're lucky in that your barrel isn't expensive to replace.

eddieharrenIf the hole is 3/8" in front of the lug shoulder, how is it through the threads? Did you mean behind the lug?

ireload2My boss(machine shop manager) brought in his brother's muzzle loader barrel to have an employee drill and tap it for scope mount bases.
For a gag I got 4 set headless set screws and 4 6-32 nuts and stuck them to the bottom of the barrel with Super Glue so it appeared that the screws for the mount bases went completely through the barrel and were secured with the nuts.
Needless to say the boss's brother nearly had a fit when he saw the mount bases attached that way.
