Rem 700 feeding problem with 300 WSM

OK I need some help here. I've been pulling my hair out with this one for a while. I have a crazy accurate custom hunting rifle built on a Rem 700 action. It is a BDL with the hinged floorplate and spring follower. It holds 3 in the magazine and will feed the 1st round from the magazine perfectly every time, when cycling the bolt on the 2nd round it picks up the round fine but on the forward bolt storke it SOMETIMES binds up on the case and I have to pull back on the bolt ever so slightly so the round will pop in to place and I can continue the forward bolt stroke to close the bolt load the round. This only happen about 20% of the time. The third round always chambers fine. Needless to say this is not acceptable in a hunting rifle and I absolutely love hunting with this gun so i need to get it figured out. I have tried everything I can think of. I tried the Wyatts box magazine and the H_S Precision neither of which i was very impressed with. Anyone have anything like this happen to them or seen it before??? If so what was the fix? Why not take it back to the smith that built it?

Will likely end up doing that if I can't fix it easily myself. I've been waiting for hunting season to end before I ship it back. Shipping it off is a PIA and costs $$$$ to boot. I was hoping for a quick N easy suggestion that would work. 163bc

From what you describe it sounds like the problem lies in the feed rail on 1 side only..

Aren't the "feed rails" on a BDL just stamped sheet metal?

Since this is not CRF, it would seem that slightly bending the offending feed rail upward would allow the round to pop up/out & allow the bolt to push the round into the chamber W/O the binding issue you are experiencing now.

From what you describe it sounds like the problem lies in the feed rail on 1 side only..

Aren't the "feed rails" on a BDL just stamped sheet metal?

Since this is not CRF, it would seem that slightly bending the offending feed rail upward would allow the round to pop up/out & allow the bolt to push the round into the chamber W/O the binding issue you are experiencing now.

The feed rail is an integral part of the receiver. The angle of the magazine lip helps determine how far beneath the feed rail the round sits and how it stacks.

163bc, the problem is fairly typical with fat case conversions. It can be like trying to feed a flashlight battery. They have a little difficulty emerging from the feed rail. Since the piece than needs adjusting is a critical part of the receiver, you should let someone with experience make the correction.

I stand corrected. I was going from memory and was recollecting the arrangement of my M700 DBM which does in fact have sheet metal lips on the detacable magazine to hold the cartridges for feeding.

My CDL of course has the rails as you describe.

Yes, that situation would require a bit more finesse as one can't put metal back.

Still, being a simple push feed, I would think the "smith" that did the chambering should be able to easily make the minor adjustments needed by removing a bit of material from the offending feed rail.

A M98 or other CRF action would require a lot more technical experience & expertise.
