300 WSM in a Savage 99???
I've got a real 'jones' about this. I'd like to know if it would be possible to build a 300WSM on a Savage 99 action?

The 99's I have now are very accurate and handle similar pressures already. I just wonder if it would be a possiblity???? Anyone know?

Bbear, I don't know if it is possible but it seems like a darned good idea! Just don't let the savage collectors find out or they will string you up for heresy. lol... Would it just require reaming out the chamber a little wider to accept the fattened cartridge? Would the clip or rotary magazine require modification? IF you do get it done please post the results. I doubt that the Savage M99 action is broad enough to permit any magnum case to feed, let alone one the diameter of the .404 Jeffrey brass, which I believe is the basis for the WSM's and the RUSM's.???

A gunsmith pal of mine converted one into a 260 Rem. for himself. He had a number of problems.
You might consult with him. I don't think you can do it.

Well, they came from the factory in 284 Win and 375, so a larger case and rim size are definately possible, I just don't know how big you can go. As for the 260 conversion, which 99 did he start with? As a 260 is simply a necked down 308, starting with a 308 chambered rifle would eliminate a great many of these problems. - Dan

I don't recall what he started with but most likely a 308. Still had problems no matter what it was.
Said he would not do it again.
He is a very competent gunsmith too and he built this rifle for himself. It works like a charm but was a pain in the butt evidently.
You would just have to speak to him to find all the details. I just shoot mine like it came from my grandfather...300 Savage. Kills deer dead.

I guess my first question would be in relation to pressures and the relative strength of a 99; but they are built in 308 and 284, which are pretty stout pressure wise- not as much as a SM, but it is an interesting idea!

My first thought was that it was not physically possible. But after a closer look I would say that it may be possible but...
My concern would be that although the pressure is not that much greater in the WSM, the bolt thrust is. This due to the larger diameter base of the WSM case. I know feeding is going to be a major issue. In the end I think if I wanted to try and beat the 308 in a Savage 99 I would be inclined to try the 30/284 wildcat. This would be a simple rebarrel given a 99 in 284 Win. Regards, Bill.

Good answer Bill, wish I had thought of that. - Dan
