300 winchester short magnum
This 300 WMS really intrigues me. Has anyone out there built one yet. Is a Mauser K-98 sufficient for this or is there another action out there someone would suggest. I know that I can buy one of these in a win mod 70 or a Browning A bolt, but that's boring and what's the point.

A GOOD K98 should work just fine, it will need some bolt face work, feed rail adjustment, and maybe a different or some modification to the follower, but the "extra" length of the mag box will allow a 300 WSM to "be all that it can be" by not having to seat the bullet half way to the primer to fit a SA mag box.

Good info, thanks.

I dunno! I think putting a short-action cartridge is like looking for the world's tallest midget (or smartest Texan)....kind of goes against the purpose. The little bit extra powder you can squeeze in by seating the bullet our won't amount to anything and you will probably have problems getting it to feed properly. If you want a long-action, use a long cartridge.

I built two 7-08's on std mausers before I got got my cz 500's. I just put a block in the rear of the mag, shortend the follower, they work great.

Take a look at a cut away drawing of the wsm, they have the bullet seated about 3/8" below the shoulder junction, a detriment to accurracy and performance. At one time all the gun critics camplained about the 300 win mag, the neck was too short, the bullet takes up too much powder space, well the wsm is even worse. A standard 300 win will gain almost a 100fps with the same pressure when you can move the bullet out to the base of the neck, there is no reason a wsm results will not be similar. By moving some of the big 30 cals out another .250" the OAL of the wsm is approx. 3.150", the 7x57 oal is 3.065, the 8x57 is 3.250 and the action was designed for these 2, so I don't think oal will cause any feeding problems.
