JudgeSharpeI need an action to build up
Hello the Camp:
I am getting the itch to build up a rifle from good action over the summer. I am thinking of mod 98, mod 70, or 03 for my self. I also would really like to find a left handed action of good design to build for my son. He really likes my 03 in 280 Remington, but watns a lefty, and we can't find a ready made one. If I can't find a lefty, or they are too costly, I still want one of the above. Where do I begin to look, what is a good price.
I know that this seems the post of a rank beginer, but I have built up barreled actions out of other rifles in the past. Don't laugh at me too much.

What caliber are you wanting to build.
What is your budget- i.e, is this going to be a high end rifle or a shooter.
With regard to a left hand rifle, the choices are Remington 700, Winchester Model 70, and Montana, and Heim. I would think that the easiest to procure, without a barrel, would be the Montana.

Rick 0311Judge,
You can get complete 03’s at CMP for around $400.00...and Sarco still has some 03 actions for sale for less than $200.00. Doesn’t solve the lefty problem, but my son is a lefty and he shoots right handed actions all the time with no trouble.

vapodog Here's an M-70 left hand magnum rifle that can be a fine donor to a .257 wby, .264 win mag,.7MM rem mag, 300 win mag etc.
The entire rifle is less than the price to outfit a mauser.
sell the take off barrel and the stock from the M-70 and you have a left hand action as good as they get for about $500
This is they way to start that I'd recommend to most folks looking to build a custom rifle.

I understand completely. In fact, I just pulled a rifle apart last night to begin restocking it. It just does not feel right to be without an ongoing rifle project of some type or another. No laughing here!
