Need Advice Drilling
Hi Guys,

I need to take some material off of an aluminum pillar in an Encore Pachmayr grip. If I drill the pillar with a standard drill bit it would give me a "tapered" surface on the pillar and I would like for the surface of the pillar to be flat. I need some type of flat point bit that is suitable for drilling aluminum. Can anybody recommend a drill bit for this application? The bit needs to be 19/32" in diameter.

Thanks in advance.

Grind your drill bit flat, then grind a relief angle on the back edge like an endmill.

Thanks Westpac,

I never thought about grinding the drill bit flat. I assumed that it wouldn't cut anymore if I did that.

Thanks for the tip! thumb

You are essentially turning the drill bit into a 2 flute endmill. Simple.

If you shorten the bit (break it in half) and grind it, you can even do some light mill work in soft material. On those special occasions where certain cutters weren't readily available, I've even reshaped Brownells Magna tip screw drivers bits and used them as milling cutters. In hard stuff! Big Grin They work great...

Good luck!

I've used this bit from Brownells with a pilot on aluminum pillars and it works well. I have turned pilots down to match the center hole as tight as possible and still let the bit spin.

Of course I bought mine when they were only $19 and Westpacs method is much cheaper.
