ffffghelp! burnt barrel?
I recived an expensive stainless ar15 barrel from bronells. Its made by evolution i think the name is, It had some blue spots at the chamber and i called brownells and asked about it. they said they handnt heard of any problems. I took it to the gunsmith to be installed he said the pin may have been soldered in.. After thinking about this and being told by some that a marlin that blew ip on me that it could hav not been tempered correctly, im getting scared... I dont need another barrel blowing up on me.. What is with this? should i investigate further? I figured they may have taken the temper out of the breach? But what im beginning to think is that they did not use coolent properly when the turned down the thinnest part of the back end of the ar15 barrel.. Which is it, and should i return the barrel? they had just gotten the shippment that was backordered so they were in a rush at evolution.. Its at the gunsmith to be put on and they said they could do it right away so im begining to panic.. thanks for any help. dave..

kcstottWhat kind of stainless is the barrel made of.
if it's 300 series there is nothing to worry about because that is not a heat treatable alloy.
If it is 400 series then it can be heat treated.
And I think you're looking at the barrel extension

Who makes barrels out of 300 series stainless?

kcstottIt was posted here and researched by me. It was one of the bigger guys can't remember who Lothar Lijia. But now that you mention it. It was only one contour and definitely not an AR barrel

Toomany ToolsYour gunsmith will check it, install it, and testfire it so don't worry. If it isn't right they'll figure it out before you ever get to fire it.

ffffgthe only information that i have recieved as to actual causes of this or problems therein is from lilja. They said this part is always screwed on and was probably heat treated before it was part of the barrel. thus not being a problem...

SmokinJI like what Lilja said. I was going to say before I don't know anyone that solders the barrel extension indexing pin in. I also don't know why you didn't call the barrel manufacturer as I gave you both the phone number and email or if you did and didn't mention it.
I would be wary of a gunsmith that is not totally familiar with what he's dealing with such as an AR barrel with a barrel extension.

That is really strange what you found out. I was just talking to Lothar Walther today and asked about those barrels and they didn't say anything about them not making them anymore or anything like that. Strange indeed. If they quit they must have just done so and why wouldn't Brownells say no backorders if they can't get them anymore?
