I was thinking of ordering a synthetic stock and try to fit it to my 96 Mauser.
What stock takes the least amount of work to make it fit?
Winchester M70 short action, Remington M700 short action, Remington Model 7, Sako short action?
I was leaning towards the Win M70 but would like to hear all your opinions about fit and fill.

Why not just get a stock for a 96? Bell and Carlson makes one.

I know what you want to do; yes, a m70 is closest. Fill it in with epoxy and chopped carbon fiber, fiberglass, or most anything solid.

I did this years ago

I made a sporter swede mod 96 6.5x55
I had a mod 70 win stock , and bedded the Mauser into this . I modified the magazine well and used win bottom metal . The barrel channel was too wide , so I accuglas the sides of the channel back in .

My gun smith laughed at me , but it worked .
I think it looks pretty good and shoots well too!

Craigster the Bell and Carlson is heavier than my current wood stock, I have a lighter stock in mind.
DPCD and Bearcat I assume it's best to start with a short action then and open it up so to speak? and which Win bottom metal did you use long or short?

The stock I used came off a mod 70 225 winchester , that I put a fajen custom on .
It has a heavy barrel , that's why the barrel channel was wide on the original stock .

It must be a short action ,for the 225

I bought new bottom metal from Numerich arms to fit that stock , if I remember right I made a magazine false wall or petition to keep cartridges rearward in the well ?

Interesting that the bolt holes lined up with the receiver

Long action; There was no short action until late 1980s; let me check tomorrow and do some comparison; I have both types of stocks and actions on hand. pics too.

Ok, here is your answer in pictures; a 96 Mauser Swede on a Model 70 stock; bsically, the only thing you need to do is fill in the rear where the wings were on the M70, and mill a recoil lug recess. Mag box is fine, and so it most of the receiver, picture is misleading; there will be no gaps at all.

That is what I needed to know, could have figured this out on my own but my oldest son has the only M70 short action rifle we have, it is away at college with him.

Not a short action; This stock is for a standard/long action. The M70 short action is about a half inch shorter.
