Scope and set-up
Ralph Martini is in the process of building my first custom rifle. A 404 Jeffery on a Granite Mountain Action. See link below "New Project" and Bolt Action Rifles to see type of rifle.
www.martiniandhagngunmakers.comRalph was asking how I would use QD mounts, I will use a scope as primary and irons only for back-up if I were to have to go into the tall grass...as such would have time to take scope off, etc.
Ralph suggested we set-up the rifle for Talley CZ rings which would be lower in height than claws or pivot mounts...more practical set-up for scope use and would make the lines of the rifle more appealing as well, etc....
Your opinions or thoughts?
Second, I am looking at Schmidt and Bender 1x4 with flash dot or the Zeiss high end 1x4 illuminated model...any of you guys have experience with either or both of these models?
Appreciate the input...
Thanks,
jjs

Chuck NelsonI can't see your rifle on the site, but would Ralph do a set of custom bases to accommodate Leupold QR rings?
Hi Chuck,
Mine is just starting out so no pics on Ralph's site...just using to show style of rifle.
I would guess he could cut the double square bridge to accomodate other rings but have not asked...
Thanks...

Duane WiebeDepends on how fast you want to take the scope on and off...nothing is faster than claw mounts.
With a 1-4, height would not seem to be a problem ...Course..there's always cost

MHC_TXClaw mounts are the "cat's meow" they are fast to take off and repeatable. The S&B scope is a 30mm diameter, so it is a bigger scope. If it was mine I would go that route (claw).
I personally don't like the pivot scope mount, so my 2nd choice would be the Talley mounts. I have them on several rifles and they work, but they are slower to take the scope off.

Hi Duwane,
Thanks for your reply.
At this point, I am not too worried about the added costs of claw mounts vs other alternatives....
What do you mean by 1-4?
Thanks,

I don't know how fast you need to get your scope off of your rifle, but I just timed myself for 6 different rifles with Talley QD's with levers, and it took all of about 4 seconds for each one.....putting it back on took longer, but I didn't time that, or try to do it quickly...just FYI
