How much clearance between mag and bottom metal on a Mod 70?
All,

I am sorting through some bedding issues on a pre-64 Model 70, and wanted to get some feedback on this.

Right now, with the magazine inserted fully into the receiver, I have just about zero (like 0.002) clearance between the bottom metal and the mag. I am pretty sure if I tighten the screws real hard I can get it to bottom out.

Now I understand that the mag should not bind as this will induce all sorts of issues, but what I was wondering is what is the generally accepted, or preferred, amount of clearance? Seem to recall reading/hearing about 0.020 would be good on a solidly bedded unit.

Any input welcome!

TIA,

Bob

The parts should just touch with enough pressure to hold the mag in place.

I think only enough clearance so it WON"T touch.

Thanks for the input, gents!

I makes sense to me that they should not touch. I have pillar bedded this to avoid putting stress on the center of the action.

If the bottom metal were "squeezing" the mag against the receiver, this would counter act my bedding.

I know mauser typically have about 0.020 clearance between the top of the mag well and receiver, too. Well, at least the few I have measured have been right around there.

I believe I will grind a bit off the mag, but may want to find an extra first, rather than screw around with my nice original part....
