The Big DogRebarreling a Vanguard
Hi,
I'm thinking about rebarreling a Weatherby Vanguard and was wondering where I can find what the threads for the barrel are? What type of threads are they? Are they standard or metric?

D HumbargerIf memory serves me they are the same threads as on the Jap arisaka. Amost 14 tpi but not quite. I'll check my data & post it here.

CraftsmanThe last one I rebarreled was quite a while back. My notes show it had a thread pitch of 1.5 MM, shank diameter of 1.013 inch, and shank length of .703 inch. Factory headspace was .003 inch on a .270 Win.

D HumbargerJust checked a Vanguard take off barrel & the thread pitch is 1.50mm or between 16 & 18 tpi.

impingementI know this is an old thread but am posting for those that do future searches and stumble across it. Just a note about the threads on a type 99 barrel. the threads are 1.5mm pitch. the nearest thread on many lathes is 17tpi. the difference between the threads is as follows in the table.

I have seen several gunsmiths just cut the threads at 17 tpi and cut them till they fit snugly. I have always had the ability to cut metric threads so it has not been an issue for me.
I reccomend Metric threads.

kcstottYep That is the way to cut Metric threads on an Imperial thread form lathe. Done it that way for years in shops that didn't have the luxury of a lathe with metric change gears.
And unless you are cutting a long thread it will not matter.
I once made a cast tension knob for a fishing reel Measure the threads as something metric that equaled 51 TPI my lathe would only cut 50 tpi but over a quarter inch it made no difference
