<JK>Reboring a barrel.
Who will rebore a barrel and who is the best at it? What is the usual cost for such work or is it just as cheap to buy a new barrel? JK.

D HumbargerGood question JK. I am also looking to have a Rem. 760 in 30-06 rebored to 338 cal. so I can chamber it to 338/06.

DutchSean, I researched that project, too, and when I figured out the cost, I bought a used 35 Whelen for $375. Close enough. Dutch.

scotReboring is not cost effective. Better to get a new barrel and do the necessary work on the outside.

Re-boring can be very cost effective when it concerns a barrel that can't be replaced (historic or otherwise) do to imprinting or even more advantageous when it has integral fittings such as ribs (1/4 or full running), recoil lug, barrel band, ramped front sight. A full integral barrel can be $3000.00 and up while a re-bore should run approximately $300.00 with a new chamber. But I do agree with you when it concerns common barrels on common rifles.

LoneEagleWell, now here is the catch. I know it is cheaper to buy a new barrel. So before the next person posts to tell me it is cheaper to rebarrel, look around and find someone who will rebarrel a Remington 7600 for me. Then pass that info to me. I have talked to a couple of people who think they remember seeing it done, but nobody that has done it. My understanding is that the welded on barrel extension is the problem. Sean

D HumbargerLong Eagle it is VERY impractical "cost wise" to rebarrel the 760/7600's that is the reason I opt to have it rebored then rechamber it myself.

The dean of reboring rifle barrels is J.W. VanPatten, of Pennsylvania. He is very old now, but even long ago did extraordinary work. Look for his address in the back of a "Gun Digest." Yes, he's somewhat expensive, but his work is The Best. ---But, if he tells you it'll be done in 6 months, don't quibble with this.

I know it is. That is why I have been pursuing the rebore route. I got an E-Mail from Dan Pedersen, dan@cutrifle.com He quoted me a price of $265 to rebore and rechamber a 7600. I have the skills and training to rechamber a barrel but I don't have the equipment to do it right now (hopefully soon though). Regards, Sean

I apologize because we kind of got off on a side topic here under your thread but if I could post one last piece of info. I spoke to a fellow at a gunshop in Fla. today where they rebarrel 7600s. Their price is $450 to REBARREL a 7600. To rebore and chamber is $265. Which is not cost effective? Sean
