I've got a 686 Whitewing I'm trying to refinish the stock on. It had that glossy laquer finish. I don't know what they used on the wood (AcraGlass?) but it is soaked in deep. I used stripper and sandpaper and thought I was down to just wood but it won't drink any oil or stain. The first coat drys right on top. Anybody done one of these? If I can't get it to look right, I am thinking of taking a file and some Bondo to it and using it as a pattern for a duplicator and some real wood.

I had at two Browning BLR's with OOOO steel wool to take down the shine, gave a nice satin, non-glare finish.

billyhilly, try some Jasco Premium Paint and Epoxy Remover. I am told it will take the stink and dishonesty off a Democratic legislator. If it can do that, your finish is a walk in the park. It is water soluble, hose it off after a while and hit it again. The Gorilla snot is blocking the pores.

Thanks Customstox, I used 3/4 can of KS-3 on it but I guess it didn't get dow deep enough. I'm starting to think the wood isn't nice enough for all the trouble I'm going through. I think I'm going to get "fitted" via the Bondo and file and find some one who can duplicate the stock in some nicley figured wood. Any Ideas about fitting a shotgun stock and who to get to duplicate my pattern?

Billhilly - One solution might be buying a replacement wood set from Cole's.

Beretta starting using a photo laminate process on their stocks some time ago. You will not get past it without harming it. The suggestion of getting a new stock from Cole's is the cheapest way to go.

Thanks for the info folks! No wonder I can't get through the finish. (I'd like to coat my house with it in case of a terrorist attack.) The stocks at Cole's are nice. (gotta love those English sets) I'm goint to give them a call. Has anyone put one of their stocks on a gun? How much trouble to final fit without screwing up the finish and how does their checkering look?

I've never fitted one, but it might be a good idea to have a gunfitter do it in conjunction with a "fitting". However, I'm sure Cole's can quote a price to install on your gun. If you are not careful, you will have a stock that costs more than the gun is worth.

I just talked to the folks at Cole's. The receiver on the Whitewing is 1/8 inch narrower than on any other model and they don't make a stock for it as of now. They said that they hoped to have their new CNC macine up and running by summer and that if all went according to plan, they could do me a custom stock at that time. Geesh, I wish I'd known what I was getting into whe I decide to start this project. I'm still thinking about having my stock duplicated although the English stocks Cole's had might be worth waiting on.
