300 savage 99 Maintenence
I have a 300 savage mod 99 that was my grandads go to deer rifle. It has not been cleaned except for me to pull a bore snake through it since grandad went to the big hunting land in the hereafter some twenty years ago. I know how to disasemble and clean a bolt but the mod99 is a bit intimidating to disassemble and clean/lube if you have never done it. I certainly don't want to screw up grandpas shooting iron. I left it with a gunsmith to do it for me but after a year of pestering him as to whether he has it done yet I finally just picked it up and said to heck with it. How much disassembly is necessary to do decent cleaning and maintenence on a mod 99? Is it a tricky job to take one down and get it back into one piece? What parts need attention and protection with lube or grease? Thanks. D

Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

Buy a can of gun scrubber and spray it out. Then a light spray down with a penetrating oil. Should be good for another 40 years

One can take it apart fairly easy getting the rotor back in place and timed properly is another problem. I wouldn't try it.

Thats why the smith most likely didn't temp it because he didn't know how to time the rotor. I have seen a couple taken apart and they never feed well after.
