Action options for a 300 H&H?

I am putting together the pieces for next years project. I just can't stop haveing rifles built. I have tried but it's no use. I am addicted. Hello I am Wes I am a rifleholic.

Anyway I bought a Charles Daly 375 length action then sold it. Made $50. Couldn't help myself. Now I need an action again.

I like Mausers but I don't want to spend the money for a magnum action nor do I want a milsurp and have to pay to open it up. Since I can't find anymore of Chuck's actions I kind of eliminated that?

Model 70 classics have gotten plain stupid on prices.

I have found a Pre 64 model 70 that is in 270. Are they long enough for the H&H like the classics? It has been rebarreled and restocked. Not the best job on either but the price is $550.

I have also looked at the MRC 1999. I am leaning this direction. It has what I want. CRF, three position safety and hinged bottom metal. All for about $450. It would also need minimal metal work.

I have an octogon barrel that I am going to make half round. I plan on a quarter rib rear sight and banded front sight and a barrel band sling swivel stud.

What are your thoughts? Did I forget another option? I am wanting to stay in the $450 range for an action tricked out like I want.

All pre-64 M70s are the same length. The 270 action would work fine for your 300H&H.

Obviously you can't get the action opened up and stay in your 450 budget range.

The pre-64's in .300 H&H & .375 H&H were indeed opened up standard actions. These being about .25" shorter than the new classic actions. The caveat is that the actions were opened in the front so that material was removed from the lower lug recess. Could just be an academic point as there are plenty of original H&H M70's in service that are no worse for wear. And these actions have mag boxes and followers for the H&H cartridges. But the last pre-64 H&H action I know of sold locally went for $850. That blows the budget!

you will spend as much opening up the standard pre-64 model 70 action as you would a mil surp. and still might not be as good. Either buy a 300 H&H and rebarrel or spend some money. There are a few Interarms in 375 that can be converted but they will cost at least 600.00.

Obviously you can't get the action opened up and stay in your 450 budget range.

I recall over the past few weeks a number of M70 classics in 7 STW popping up in GunsAmerica and GunBroker. These would need no modification and have been in the $600 range (there goes the budget again!).

That is a classic not a pre-64 and they are different actions. Both will require alteration by a qualified gunsmith. Neither will be cheap but both will be good.

A few months ago I purchased a beautifully made older Mark 10 magnum action (magnum in the sense that it has the bolt face for the winchester line of magnum cartridges such as .300 win mag, .338 win mag, etc. So it would probably work well for .300 H and H.
I paid $250 for the action, added a 3 position safety for $125. Nice action. If you can find an older magnum MarK X that might be the way you want to go.

Buy this one, sell the barrel and the stock for $75.00, use that money towards a 3 position safety, put a good barrel on it, and away you go.

You might also try to locate an FN Deluxe or Supreme "magnum". I bought a semi-custom FN Deluxe 300H&H with el cheapo scope for $400 at a recent Tulsa show.

What receiver mod is needed on a factory7stwM70 for it to accept the .300H&H?

New barrel and it should be good to go.
