Proper pitch for the .358 winchester ?
I love those .358's but I've only owned lever guns. In a fit of maddnes I had a gunsmith rebarrel a Rugar MkII to .358 with a shilen bbl. thinking the pitch would be the same as factory bbls. 1-12 and some other barrel makers like Douglas. Much to my suprise the shilen bbl has a 1-14 Pitch ! I talked to the head honcho at Shilen (after the fact) and he assured me that was a better pitch than the 1-12. I'm not sure,
what do you guys think ? I will sure be disappointed if this rifle doesn't shoot as well
as other
.358's with the i-12 pitch.

By the way if you get a new Sierra reloading manual they put a picture of me in it a nice light Blond Bear I shot with a .358 win in a Blr. It went 500 + and made the Book. Kinda neat for me as I'm just Joe nobody.

Hi Carl,

Congratulations on getting into the Sierra book. You had sent me pics of that big bear and it's really impressive.

On the 358 twist. I think you will be fine but the shooting will tell. I would load up the 225 Partition and if it groups at 200 yds then your all set. The 35 Whelan has a slow twist and it does fine.

I'm interested in hearing how the 1X14 twist does. I'm abut to have a Rem model 7 re-barreled to 358win using a 1X12 twist.

Unless you're shooting bullets heavier then 250 grs, the 1-14 should be fine. If you're going to shoot cast bullets, then it will be even better then the 1-12 pitch.

.358, I have a stainless Shilen bbl chambered for the .358 Win. It has a 1:14 twist and shoots .5" groups with 225 grain sierra btsp and 225 partions all day. Lou

Winchester did it in 1x14
savage in 1x16 !!!
Sauer did it in 1x12

I've done 10, and 14, and have a savage.

They ALL shoot the 225's great... the 1x10 was for barnes bullets... but somehow I never got around to consistantly hunting with that gun... and it shoots 3/4-7/8 with sierra 225 game kings and is a SLAYER

come to think of it, the sierra gameking is my favorite 35 caliber bullet...

.358. I specifically tried avoiding the 12" twist in the Savage 99 by having a .308 rebored to .358.I went with a 16" twist & am very happy with it. It'll stabilize anything up to & including 250grs. just fine. My choice for a .358 Win. would be either 14" or 16". In a Whelen I would go either 12" or 14".

I have a Shilen barrel with that twist. It's a 358 Winchester on a model 70. It shoots .75" at 100 yards with 225 ballistic tips. They're long bullets, but work well. I've killed one deer with it and one with the 225 grain Sierra. Both deer dropped right there. I'm pleased.

Thanks guys, 6you have given me some valuable input and I'm more confident about the twis. I won't get to shoot it for a while but when I do I will post the results.
