??Caliber etching on barrel??
I see so many rifles with the caliber etched or engraved, I don't know which, and it looks so much nicer than the old stamped numbers.

How is this done and what is needed to do it?

Thanks,

Sam

I've never done it, but I heard that you can also go to many trophy shops (that make sports trophies) and they can engrave barrels and actions too, if the owners are cool about it.

for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

Yea Mark,

But are the trophy shops able to do curved surfaces like putting the serial # on a barrel or doing same with the caliber?

The only one I've seen was so faint you could hardly read it. I took it off with about 3 passes of sandpaper.

This etching looks interesting. I'll have to investigate it more.

I used to use hand stamps in a jig. This next week I have a computerised engraving machine being delivered. A motorized pantograph engraver would also do well. The only issue the trophy engraving places would have is that many of them just use a pantograph that has a diamond point, and therefore can't really get the deapth that we are looking for.

Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

BIG SAM - Consider having the caliber hand engraved. It can be done for $4-5 per letter, and it looks the best IMO.

Agree. If you go to the Gun Shows in Charlotte, you will occasionally see an Engraver doing some work at the Show. I've seen both a man and a woman, on separate occasions, working on something, maybe Revolvers. But, they are not at every Show.

Or call David Tooley in Gastonia and see if he could recommend an Engraver near you.

Best of luck to you.

Hey Snellstrom, That is what I had in mind. Hadn't considered Gold Inlay though.

Hot Core,
Couldn't you get the same results as gold inlay with a tube of gold rub and buff. It's a paste in gold leaf you apply by hand and buff off the excess. It looks good on factory markings on the actions and barrels. I remember using it many years ago on an 1100 action with some scroll work on it.

Hey olcrip, I don't believe I've ever tried what you mentioned, so I don't know. Sounds like it might do fine though.

I also like what Mad Jack is doing. That looks real good to me too.
