What would you do with this?
My stepfather passed away a month or so ago and he left me a pre-64 30-06 and a push feed Winchester XTR in .270. The pre 64 is going to stay as is but I was contemplating rebarreling the .270. Would it be better to leave the XTR as is or worth the money to have it rebarreled? It is in 90-95% condition.

Around Thanksgiving your going to get asked how the rifles are. Best to leave them as is for now.

In the mean time shoot them. He picked two of the best cartridges ever.

I would change the .270 to a 25/06....would match up better with the nice 30/06 IMHO, nice big gap between calibers and uses. 25.06 would make a great long range varminter with a heavy barrel & big scope Cool

I would change the .270 to a .35 Whelen....would match up better with the nice 30/06 IMHO, nice big gap between calibers and uses. .35 Whelen would make a great medium range big-gamer with a medium barrel & medium scope beer beer

I wouldn't change them, but if I just had to scratch the itch I would go the whelen route rather than the 25-06. In fact, if I were given a 25-06 I would immediately trade/change it. If you want a good 25cal go 257rob. or improved version of same.

best idea is to leave as is, they don't really overlap. use the 270 with 130g's and the 06 with 180's.

I'd shoot the hell out of the 270 - use it a a varmint gun on prairie dogs. When you see the accuracy deteriorate in 10 to 20 years, then rebarrel it to whatever is hot that year.

I'd leave that Model 70 XTR alone and use it. Those XTRs were good rifles, and they almost always shot well right out of the box. I bought one in 270 Win. back in 1978, shot it a lot, and hunted with it a lot. Most of the time it kept five shots under an inch. It was a totally reliable, first-class factory rifle, and I loved it. I took my first real trophy mule deer with it, and I have a lot of fond memories of that 270......

Thanks guys, I think I will leave it as is and shoot it till it won't shoot anymore and then decide what to turn it into.
