I have a 20 year old, push feed, M70 Ranger that is the most accurate rifle I own. I guess I got lucky when I picked it up cheap at a "going out of business sale" years ago. I love how it shoots, but hate how it looks. I'd like to replace the stock and I've been told the long action, featherweight, stock Winchester now puts on the controlled round feed rifles will be a "drop in fit." Winchester parts department said they "think so," but the woman did not sound confident. Can someone confirm that I could swap these stocks?

I bought three rangers years ago ...new for under $300 each...all shoot great and at least two of them are now in new walnut stocks from Winchester...go for it.

Mine was $229 as I recall. It was a good price even then, but it also shows I'm getting old! Can you confirm it's the featherweight stock that I want?

the ranger is just a cheapened up model 70. It has bottom metal, right?

it would be a LA, as the short action didnt' come out until the last round of CRFs.

You can buy an older featherweight stock, which should be LA (measure the action screws to get length) and then you'll need to bed it. These go on ebay for 20-150 bucks, depending. Make sure you get the action screw length from the seller before bidding

Winchester has new, long action, featherweight stocks in their parts catalog. These are for the new CRF rifles. What I'm trying to confirm is that these will fit my M70 ranger (push feed). My ranger does have bottom metal and the featherweight barrel contuor.

Are the stocks you used featherweights for the CRF action?

I'm not for sure, but a stock for the "Classic" M70 action may not fit your pushfeed. Oops! I missed your statement about the featherweight barrel on your Ranger. Didn't know they built them that way.

okay...
let me restate this..

jsut before xmas, i took a ranger in 708 and put into a new stock... had to fill here and there on the barrel, carve a tad on the action rails,.. and BED it... worked fine.. but it was NOT a dropin..

the nice thing is a featherweight barrels/stocks will allow for you to open the barrel... rather than just fill alot.. the FW will be SMALLER in the barrel channel than your rifle is in barrel.
